- One of Ireland's greatest resources is it's abundance of clean
rivers and lakes. Holycross village is attractively sited on the River
Suir.
- five of Ireland's most majestic rivers find their way to the
sea in the South-east Region. These rivers provide extensive opportunities for
varied and interesting angling. The best wild brown trout fishing in Europe,
excellent salmon fishing and sea-trout fishing on the coast are all
available.
- the River Suir rises in the Devil's bit Mountain and flows
through the limestone country of South Tipperary/North Waterford to reach it's
estuary at Carrick-on-Suir. Almost its entire channel is a continuous series of
deep and shallow glides, interrupted occasionally by shallow riffles. It
increases in width from about 10 metres at Thurles to 60 metres at
Carrick-on-Suir. Its physical characteristics provide an ideal habitat for
salmon and brown trout.
- Renowned for large Spring salmon in the past it went through
lean times in the seventies and eighties but salmon numbers are now increasing
again. Grilse runs begin in late June and usually last through to the end of
September, when the season ends.
- Much of the River Suir fisheries are controlled by Angling
Associations, all of whom offer fishing permits to visiting anglers on a daily
or weekly basis. A number of private fishery owners also accommodate
visitors.
- permits are available for the Holycross area from Hayes shop in
the village.
